Something to think about… If you can remember

May 19th, 2011 by alan

Can’t remember where you parked the car? Blame it on your aging brain pathways.

Research out of Johns Hopkins University shows why our memory falters as we grow older. Pathways to the brain’s hippocampus degrade — by as much as 20 percent — as we age. I spoke recently with Michael Yassa, an assistant professor of psychological and brain sciences and lead author on the paper in PNAS, about the work — and how it could eventually help Alzheimer’s disease patients.

How did you conduct this research?

Eight Foods You Should Almost Never, Ever Eat

Watch what you eat!

Watch what you eat!

Most soybean, corn, cotton and canola crops in the U.S. are genetically altered. Some experts argue that these crops could pose serious health and environmental risks, but the scientific picture is currently incomplete — deliberately so.

Agricultural corporations such as Monsanto and Syngenta have restricted independent research on the crops. They have refused to provide independent scientists with seeds, or else have set restrictive conditions that severely limit research.  This is legal because under U.S. law, genetically engineered crops are patentable.

The Los Angeles Times reports:

“Agricultural companies defend their stonewalling by saying that unrestricted research could make them vulnerable to lawsuits if an experiment somehow leads to harm, or that it could give competitors unfair insight into their products. But it’s likely that the companies fear something else as well: An experiment could reveal that a genetically engineered product is hazardous or doesn’t perform as promised.”

Food vs Fuel, Redux

Food vs Fuel, Redux

Food vs Fuel, Redux

Ed. note: This piece first appeared on Energy Outlook, Geoffrey Styles’ blog.

Today’s Washington Post includes a noteworthy opinion piece from Tim Searchinger of Princeton University concerning the impact of expanding biofuel production on global food prices and availability. Food vs. fuel competition made headlines in 2007 and 2008 but then subsided during the recession and financial crisis. This year, with global crop yields down and food demand up, and with food-derived biofuel production at record levels, the issue has returned. The relationship between biofuel output and food prices is certainly complex, but it is significant, particularly for those who spend much of their incomes on unprocessed grains and vegetable oils. And both population and biofuels demand will continue to increase from today’s levels.

Chill Out!™ - Organic Fire Suppressant + Cooling Treatment

Chill Out!™ - Organic Fire Suppressant + Cooling Treatment

Fuel Barons announces the launch of a revolutionary new product for Fire Suppression+ Cooling:

CHILL OUT! is a specially formulated HEAT + FIRE SUPPRESSANT. Designed

to instantly suffocate small fires with a chilling and encapsulating foam

process that prevents re-ignition. CHILL OUT! can be used on

Class A, B, D + K fires, it is non-toxic, safe to use and leaves no residue or mess to clean up.

CHILL OUT! is an ideal Chilling Agent: Can be used to cool ethanol (alcohol) burners of all types after burning so that more fuel can be added without risk of a dangerous flash fire. 100% Biodegradable.

CHILL OUT! has the advantages of foam and dry chemical without the mess, specialized apparatus or contamination to our environment.

CHILL OUT! works in two ways to remove heat and then to encapsulate the fire at the molecular level putting the fire out, ensuring against re-ignition. The 16 oz aerosol is designed to safely extinguish a small to medium fire within seconds. The Trigger-Spray bottle takes advantage of the rapid cooling

properties of CHILL OUT!. For ventless fireplaces and gel party lites it is considered a pre-treatment between fuel refills when continuous burns are needed. A few sprays of CHILL OUT!into the tank will ensure the flame is out. Then a few more sprays on the surface of the burn chamber and into the tank will cool a tank in seconds from temperatures over 500ºF to lower than 100ºF, eliminating the chance of a dangerous flash fire. Available as both AEROSOL for Medium fires, and TRIGGER SPRAY for use in container fires and cooling needs.FOR MORE INFO CLICK HERE: CHILL OUT!™

The World’s Most Fuel Efficient Car: 285 MPG, Not A Hybrid

January 19th, 2011 by alan

This is what a team of engineers can do when challenged to push the limits of fuel efficiency and technology. You may have already heard of VW’s 1-liter car, but take a closer look. It’s a sports-economy concept car produced a few years ago by VW engineers, to answer one big question: could they build a car that consumes less than 3 liters of fuel for every 100 km traveled?

No Link between Matches, Gasoline, and Fire

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report) – The Fox News Channel today attempted to bust what it called a “mainstream media myth” by reporting that there was no link between matches, gasoline and fire.

“Gasoline and matches don’t start fires,” said Fox host Glenn Beck.  “People start fires.”

Mr. Beck went on to say that there was no link between “oxygen, hydrogen and water.”

Elsewhere, Verizon trumpeted its new iPhone, announcing, “For the first time, consumers will have a choice of which wireless carrier drops their calls.”
